Also known as the backbone, the spinal column is a strong flexible structure that holds the weight of the head and torso as well as allowing movement in many directions. If the spinal column was a straight inflexible rod, then everyone would be walking like a robot. Although that is not the case since the spine is flexible and enables the body to be able to twist, turn, and bend. The spinal column surrounds and protects the spinal cord since there are bundles of nerves running from the brain, through the spinal cord and branching out through the rest of the body. There are three natural curves that the spine consists of, they are the neck curvature or the cervical spine, the upper back curvature or the thoracic spine, and the lower back curvature or the lumbar spine. When the body is being viewed from the side all these curvatures make a slight “S” shape. The spine is an essential structure that helps support the upright posture of humans as well as providing the body to be flexible to move and protect the spinal cord as well. Many local doctors inform their patients about the importance of spinal health through information about spinal care and how to support a healthy spine.
