I bet you don’t realize or think about how much your foot mechanics have to do with your everyday motion and tasks. In reality, the feet are often overlooked and we contribute foot pain to the shoes we wear. While this does have an impact on our bodies and the pain our feet feel, the underlying issue of it all could be your arches. Just like everyone has their own taste and personality, everyone has different feet. Each foot is sculpted different and these slight differences could be causing more stress to your body than you realize. The differences that we have in the arches can cause an unbalance in the body all the way up to the neck. First, the ankles can become pronated based off of the uneven weight distribution in each foot. If the ankle is pronated, now the alignment to the knee is off, causing the knee to feel more pressure. The knee is a hinge joint, meaning it does not support the weight. The knee is there to simply facilitate the leg in walking/running. To help take this added pressure off the knee joint, the iliac crest, which is the hip bone, will drop. Now, the ankle, knee and hip are all out of line. With these three being off, its typical to see a shoulder drop as the bodys attempt to even out. However, now we are suffering from foot pain, knee pain, low back pain, upper neck stiffness and shoulder discomfort. All of this stems from the foot. With custom foot orthotics, Dr. Alexander Jimenez can assess the arches and provide an insole that applies pressure to the correct places in the arches for maximum benefit. These foot orthotics do not just have one arch support, but rather has support in three separate arches, providing the body to work with optimal results. The entire body will benefit from custom foot orthotics and your body will thank you. – Kenna Vaughn, Senior Health Coach
[00:00:11] Over the next minute, we’re going to show you the proper procedures for two important chiropractic communication tests. The functional squat test and appropriate receptive muscle test. Let’s look at the squat test. Notice how the patient stands with her feet shoulder-width apart and repeats the motion twice. This is done first without functional orthotics. Then with the test orthotics underfoot, the entire process is repeated. You’ll notice some key differences. The differences are a great tool to open communication about orthotics with your patients. To complete the squat test with a different view, the patient turns to the left and squats twice without and then with the orthotics. With the patients still standing on the test orthotics, you can begin the proprioceptive testing. Push the arm straight down to the side. Next, have the patients step off the orthotic and repeat the test. Wow, what a difference. That’s the aha moment. The best patient communication tool you’ll ever use in your practice.
